An ad hominem challenges a message by challenging the character, credentials or claims of its messenger.
It’s the nun giving sex advice. Or the career politicians talking about balancing the budget. Or the technocrat talking about vaccine safety when the occasion of injuries keeps stacking.
Ad hominems allow us to shoot down the messenger,yes. But they also allow us to shoot the message too.
