There are two types of people that make for a functional social circle. The first group almost always assumes that everyone they meet is innocent until proven guilty.
The other group assumes the opposite, that people are more complex than they let on. And this too, is not wrong.
When these two types of people work together, the frontiers of trust, perspicacity, discretion and intelligence are almost always covered. Hares and tortoises.
